Smartphone app puts clinical trials at the fingertip of doctors

Cancer clinicians can now access the latest information on clinical trials underway in Victoria from their smartphone, following today’s launch of the Victorian Cancer Trials link (VCTL) mobile application for Apple and Android devices.

Clinicians can use the app to search for a trial or filter options based on phase, hospital or tumour type. They can also keep abreast of new trials or changes to existing trials with push notifications. Developed by Cancer Council Victoria, in partnership with Cancer Trials Australia, the app is based on the popular and successful Victorian Cancer Trials Link (VCTL) website.

Cancer Council Victoria CEO Todd Harper said the smartphone app built on the success of the VCTL website, which was launched more than five years ago.

“For clinicians and cancer patients, time is of the essence. This app provides cancer clinicians who are on the go with accurate and up-to-date information on cancer clinical trials at the touch of few buttons,” Mr Harper said.

“By providing them with quick and easy access to Victorian clinical trials we hope to increase patient participation, as well as cross-hospital referrals.”

Cancer Trials Australia CEO Marcus Clark said the app had been designed following extensive clinician consultation.

“This is an app designed specifically with clinicians and other health care professionals in mind. It includes customisable push notifications that will help clinicians keep abreast of the latest news on behalf of their patients,” Mr Clark said.

“At any one time Cancer Trials Australia manages around 150 clinical trials open to new patients. These trials are now searchable via the new app.”

The Clinical Trials Victoria app is now available for free download from both the iTunes App Store and Google Play for use on Apple and Android mobile devices.
