Multidisciplinary care is the gold standard of care for patients with cancer. A variety of multidisciplinary approaches to care are practiced in the region, including: - the use of multidisciplinary team meetings for prospective management of patients,
- case conferences, and
- department meetings with nursing and medical staff, case management and care coordination.
Multidisciplinary care is an important concept used to underpin the Patient Management Frameworks. Initiatives underway, or planned, to improve multidisciplinary care in the region include: - improvement, formalisation and dissemination of protocols and documentation for multidisciplinary team meetings,
- development of multidisciplinary team meetings at hospitals with higher caseloads,
- investigation of strategies to include general practitioners and staff at smaller hospitals in MDT meetings in Bendigo or Mildura, and
- development of dedicated and resourced multidisciplinary team meeting rooms, and establishment of videoconferencing facilities to enhance participation of more remote sites.
